Description
This is a maquette (the first visualisation of a number of sculptures and drawings on the same theme) for Brown's renowned sculpture 'Meat Porters' 1957-60, commissioned by The Harlow Art Trust.
Two men are depicted bearing the massive carcass of a flayed ox. The dynamic movement in the piece is conveyed through the straining limbs of the porters and the splayed legs of the animal. Animal and human flesh appear tomerge and the gray-brown patina underscores the subject.
