Description
O'Connell uses a plethora of materials and processes; from fabricating works from steel cable or bronze to composing works out of found objects such as feathers and moss. However, irrespective of materials, the overarching theme to O'Connell's work is nature. Her oeuvre comprises long, lithe structures, squat and rounded pieces or works with organic apertures - all of which possess a specific lightness of touch.
The title of this work, Carapace, alludes to organisms with an exo-skeleton. The tight and intricately wrought steel cable of this piece, by implication, points towards that which is inside, invisible, complex and delicate and, therefore, becomes indicative of O'Connell's multifaceted artistic practice.
