Phillip King
Sun's Roots
2000
Description
This sculpture appears as a rising sun anchored to the earth by a fretwork beam. King's reference is to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, who, according to legend, gave birth to the first Emperor of Japan - the sculpture being a metaphor for earthly and for heavenly bodies coming together. Formally, there is a complex curve to the surface of the 'sun', giving to the perimeter areas differing thickness.
