Chariot

2001

Stephen Cox | Chariot

Description

'Chariot' is based on the form of large Indian festival floats. The house-like shelter at the top of the chariot would house the priest as he is taken through the streets, praying, and blessing the crowd. In Cox's sculpture the wheels of the chariot double as massive gongs, the sort that are sounded to call people to prayer. Cox takes much of his imagery from southern cultures, and has immersed himself in that of India since 1988.
