Sir Anthony Caro OM

Description

One of a series of book forms that Caro made with Hans Spinner in Grasse, this is a sculpture in its own right rather than a maquette for a larger version. The ceramic and brass elements were assembled later Caro's London studio and when Wilfred Cass saw them, he encouraged Caro to make a monumental version. However, this could not be made in ceramic on the scale that Wilfred envisaged, so Caro created a different piece in concrete and bronze.
