Description

At the source of this work, lies the artist's memory of two boulders resting against each other in Harris in Northern Scotland. Visitors to Harris would often climb or be pulled through the stones in a ritualistic activity reminiscent of birth. Venus Stone addresses the idea of fertility and its archaic links that were set forward by the act Dilworth witnessed in Harris.

The title of this work forms associations with the Venus of Willendorf, an ancient statuette believed to be representative of female fertility and sensuality and also to Venus, the Roman goddess associated with love, beauty and fertility.

The form of Venus Stone reinforces these feminine associations whilst maintaining a harmonious balance between its interior and exterior that unifies it with its surroundings. Its material and organic shape lend a primordial nature to this work and thus refer to the original boulders that inspired Dilworth.
