Description
Sandy Brown's ceramics are characterised by a playful and faux-naïf quality that is intrinsically feminine in nature. The deceptively simple forms of her sculptural works are fulsome, vibrant and fecund and 'Ovum and Transition' is no exception.
The rounded and curvaceous forms that comprise this piece appear to evoke the moments before conception. The 'closed' piece, like an ovum (a female sex cell) seems to gravitate towards the 'open' piece within which it is designed to fit. However, this potential union can also make reference to the act of sex - the 'closed' piece representing masculinity and the 'open' piece indicative of femininity. The effect of the paint on each of the pieces that comprise 'Ovum and Transition' - their stripes and spots respectively - also support this duality.
Brown frequently makes reference to sexuality in her sculptural ceramic works. Many of her works are inspired by female figures that evoke ancient mother goddesses and female deities.
