Description
As a result of its four bulbous 'legs,' Formulations (Stance) is akin to an odd, over-sized, black rubber chair or a mindless, mutant animal. Unlike the vast majority of Cragg's recent work, the piece possess a certain quitetude, an inertness that is captured through its sure footed bulbousness. Any movement in the piece is captured by its surface texture, reminiscent of topographical contour lines complete with letters and numbers.
As with the majority of Cragg's works in bronze, Formulations (Stance) belies the material from which it is made. The work evolved through a number of materials, (including plaster, latex, clay and polyurethane) and many stages of casting and firing until this final bronze version was realised.
