Description

As kinetic sculptures Yo Reina and Massa 5 are a playful, fun and humorous duo, specifically designed to be touched, sat upon, spun and interacted with. They are based on the simple form of pebbles and eggs and appear as if, mushroom-like, to have almost grown or evolved from the ground.

They are carved and sanded from blocks of cream Botticino Classico marble, that was shipped in from Brescia in Northern Italy and weigh 4 and 0.7 tonnes respectively. Each piece is specially fitted with steel bearings, which allows them to revolve slowly when pushed.

As a pair of little and large 'breast-like' shapes, identical in colour and material qualities, they have a strong mother and child relationship, made more poignant by their close positioning. The near perfect roundness of Massa 5 in contrast to its more misshapen larger partner follows this idea, capturing a sense of youthfulness and innocence against its more weathered protector. This hierarchy is also hinted at in their Spanish titles - Yo Reina meaning 'queen' and Massa translating as 'dough' - an influence from the artist's seven year stay in the country.

Looking upon and interacting with both pieces as if you were involved in this equation, these sculptures have almost lifelike qualities, appearing as mute, inert characters, sitting, watching and nodding as people pass by.
