Description
'Helix' is part of a series of experiments that explore the physical and visual properties of chains, wire and kinetics. It is a sinuous, delicate sculpture, marrying elements of chance with geometric perfection.
Made from a series of identical, flat loops suspended from a central chain, its method of construction is a key feature of the work and determines the overall form it takes. It is powered by short, intermittent bursts from an electric motor, which begin the cycle of rotation. As the speed quickens, the chain becomes more twisted and taut causing the loops to separate and spin at different speeds. This effect creates a series of intricate patterns, ever-changing as the chain slows and draws back upon itself.
It is a visually engaging, mesmerising sculpture, which plays on the reflective qualities of its surface. Using light to also cast shadows of the spinning loops, there are almost two elements to the work, a positive and negative version. Both command the same level of attention and focus, vying against each other for the gaze of the viewer.
