Description
Two flutes on a 'bamboo' structure move and play in response to the wind. Duet for Two Flutes is one of a series following Pipes for Peace 1991 which featured a solo flute. Set on an aluminium framework, the flutes move in response to the wind and bring attention to the sculpture itself. The single instrument in other works tended to direct attention away from the sculpture.
Peter Logan writes: 'The linked parts of the sculpture move in a continuous chain reaction producing the sculpture's energy from a gentle form of chaos. The nature of these movements changes as frequently as the wind, producing an infinite number of variations of the sculpture's many shapes.'
The flutes are made to the mathematical proportions of the ancient Japanese Hakushaki flute, in which the holes are placed at intervals one tenth of its length. The length of the 'bamboo' staves is calculated in relation to the flutes to allow them to pass each other without colliding and to provide an efficient counter-balance. When the wind is strong and in the right direction the flutes play, 'although,' says Logan, 'a duet is danced more often than it is heard.'
