Grenville Davey | Button

Description

At first glance this work of Grenville Davey appears to be functional, a characteristic to be found in some of his works, but not all. An enlargement of an everyday object to the extent that it takes on a new identity is not an unusual strategy, but it plays an oblique role in our consideration of this sculpture. The precision with which Button is made serves to emphasise its ordinary nature and the possibility of function. A function which cannot be fulfilled, however, leads to a realm of other considerations, and a sculpture which initially may seem bland in its form and colour, takes on a wealth of meaning.
