British Sculpture in the 21st Century

25 January 2005: Wendy Taylor, The Seed Series

The Cass Sculpture Foundation, Britain’s leading foundation devoted to advancing twenty-first century British sculpture, opens the first of it’s exhibitions for 2005 at it’s extended London gallery, 3+4 Percy Street W1, on 3rd February with ‘The Seed Series’, an exhibition of recent sculpture and drawings by acclaimed British artist Wendy Taylor C.B.E.

Although they may not be aware of the fact, for thousands of people Wendy Taylor’s work is part of their everyday lives. Best known for her large, abstract public commissions, her sculpture can be seen in corporate headquarters, airports, hospitals, colleges, civic centres and endless other public sites throughout Britain. One of the first artists to bring sculpture into the truly public realm, Wendy Taylor has contributed greatly to the development of sculpture for public places in this country.

Wendy Taylor also produces drawings and sculptures of animals, anatomically correct and realised in minute detail, however, The Seed Series is a departure from the two distinct strands of her working practice. The complex, yet graceful, bronze casts of The Seed Series are inspired by casings, the protective armour to the life force within. They address Wendy Taylor’s urge to re-explore her figurative roots through a subtle, Classical assessment of natural forms. As with her public commissions, Wendy Taylor’s application is always progressing and technical perfection is guaranteed. She has often stated that what she aims for “is bulk, form, feel, even smell”, appealing to our every sense through the textural and sensuous.

Wendy Taylor rarely exhibits in galleries, however, The Seed Series not only brings Wendy Taylor’s work back into the gallery context, this is the first time that these highly refined pieces have been brought together for exhibition as a complete series.

The maquettes are priced from £2,600 plus VAT. Please note that all delivery, packaging, insurance and installation are in addition.

Wendy Taylor C.B.E was brought up, lives and works in Bow in the East End of London. She studied at St Martin’s School of Art, London (1961-67). Wendy Taylor has over 60 sculptures in public spaces, and is represented in public and private collections both in Britain and abroad. She is the recipient of numerous awards and was made CBE in 1988.
