British Sculpture in the 21st Century

1 June 2010: Between The Lines - new exhibition of...

Amazons (detail) by Zoe Paul

BETWEEN THE LINES, the latest in a new series of exhibitions in the Visitor's Gallery, which focuses on emerging artists, will feature sculptures, sketches and maquettes by Eva Berendes and Zoe Paul. Both Berendes and Paul use formal vocabularies to produce works that recall historical movements and to create delicate tensions between past and present, as well as high art and craftsmanship.

Eva Berendes' work addresses the wide-reaching influences of modernism, by combining and conflating references to the applied arts, design and the geometric abstractions associated with high art. The resulting works are sophisticated and delicate forms, which allude to an ongoing and evolving engagement with formalism.

Zoe Paul uses formalism as a means of parodying classical Greek sculpture. Using domestic tiles and grout, Paul creates abstracted geometric compositions based upon the classical poses used in Hellenistic sculpture.

BETWEEN THE LINES is open from the 2nd of June until the 5th September in the Cass Sculpture Foundation Visitor's Gallery.
