British Sculpture in the 21st Century

30 March 2010: Molly Smyth at Goodwood

Molly Smyth - With Lung, With Throat (detail)

Following on from our first successful indoor exhibition SUBJECT | MATTER, the Cass Sculpture Foundation's new indoor exhibition opens today to coincide with our summer opening. This exhibition will feature six works, exhibited together for the first time, from Molly Smyth, a graduate of Camberwell College of the Arts, who currently lives and works in London.

Imbued with contradicting qualities such as density and hollowness, visual restriction and exposure, Smyth's works are intriguing pieces that are inspired by notions of physical presence and absence. The materials used often withhold revelations, deceiving the viewer and challenging our perceptions of reality and of space, in With Lung, With Throat (pictured), what appears to be sturdy concrete is in fact malleable foam and the two plinths in Sudden Loss of Pressure at first seem identical but on closer inspection demonstrate how the relationships between materials are altered by human decision in two very different scenarios.

Molly Smyth's work will be on display in the Cass Sculpture Foundation Visitor Gallery from 30 March to 28 May 2010, followed by a group exhibition of new sculptors.
