Marianne Vitale at the Whitney Biennial
23 January 2010
Marianne Vitale, whose Bronzes are currently on display at the Foundation until March, as part of SUBJECT | MATTER, has been selected to participate in the prestigious 2010 Whitney Biennial, February 25 to May 30, 2010.
Each year, the Whitney Biennial captures a snapshot of contemporary modern art. The 2010 Biennial has been refined this year, to contain one work or a series of works by an exclusive list of 55 artists. Emanating from a rigorous selection process, the variety and quality of the selected works promises to be astonishing.
Vitale's Bronzes, cast from burlap and wax wrapped around wood are typical of her individual style. She creates sculptures made using detritus and found materials, transforming the discarded and unwanted into objects with cultural worth. On closer inspection, this delicate yet grotesque series of bronzes mutates into a host of fantastical, animalistic beings.
