6 October 2009: Anish Kapoor at the Royal Academy ...

Tall tree and the eye, 2009. 76 elements, approx. 15m h. Stainless steel and carbon steel

'Tall Tree and the Eye', 2009, part of the Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts has recently replaced Bryan Kneale's 'Triton III' which was displayed as part of the Summer Exhibition, in the Annenberg Courtyard of the Royal Academy. Anish Kapoor at the Royal Academy of Arts will be on view from the 26th September to the 11th December 2009.

This major solo exhibition surveys Kapoor's career to date, as a well as showcases new and previously unseen works. Kapoor is renown for his works which effect a profound spiritual engagement with the viewer, particularly works such as 1000 Names (1979-80), Marsyas (2002) and Sky Mirror (2006).

Svayambh (a Sanskrit word which roughly translates to "auto-generated"), is a monumental work which has the appearance of a vast mass of wax that moves about, almost imperceptibly on sunken rails leaving a residue in its wake as it traverses the breadth of Burlington House.

Another work, Shooting in the Corner (2009) will be displayed in the Large Weston and Small Weston Rooms. The work features a cannon which shoots projectiles of red wax into a corner at regular intervals, with the wax accumulating over the duration of the exhibition - producing a work of extraordinary complexity and drama.
