Steven Gregory's 'One of us on a Tricycle' is the most recent addition to the Cass Sculpture Foundation. An enlarged version of Gregory's 2006 piece of the same title (which is also in the grounds at Goodwood), 'One of us on a Tricycle,' 2008, will comprise the Foundation's Olympic commissions which will be placed in key sites across London in preparation for the 2012 games.
At 5m tall the awe-inspiring size of the piece is countered by it's darkly comic subject matter. Gregory's work often posses an acerbic wit which plays upon one's childish sensibilities and, very often, the nature of postmodernity. Despite the subject's lack of facial features, its earnest expression can still be understood by way of its body language. The ability to create credible monumental sculpture that is suffused with comedy is no mean feat and is seldom realised on this scale. As Damien Hirst has said of Gregory, 'in these visually bombarding and morally conflicting times, seemingly effortlessly he creates art that prods, and pokes, ignores and strokes and slaps us into submission.' Unnervingly humorous and wonderfully kitsch, 'One of us on Tricycle' does just this...
