As part of Glasgow International, in partnership with West Dean College and supported by Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Cass Sculpture Foundation brings you Mineral Supplements.
Mineral Supplements is long term project consisting of an evening performance of new writing by five artists working together to uncover the psychological, emotional, and bodily resonance of ceramics. These readings touch on the inherent symbolism of ceramics and its connotations with labour, how it is often used as a form of materialist self-help in contemporary bourgeois lifestyle trends, and its psychological and bodily connection to unspoken, personal and feminist everyday lives. This project is a collaborative production of a body of work that integrates ceramic sculpture and writing. The research will centre around social and bodily relations associated with ceramic material, its active therapeutic qualities and will as a result interrogate invisible forms of labour associated with this material.
The concepts surrounding the work develop firstly with a one-week period of material and text-based research at Glasgow Sculpture Studios. During this time, the artists will find ways to integrate ceramic processes and writing in association with the experience of working with clay, resulting in the public performance, Mineral Supplements in April at SWG3 in Glasgow. Over the summer the artists’ will then undertake an in depth wood-fire kiln ceramics residency at Cass Sculpture Foundation in partnership with West Dean College, which will result in an exhibition and mini publication later in the year.
