The detail and delicate artistry of Mikro House point directly towards its method of production as the 'art' at the heart of this work. Buxton uses Electro Chemical Machining (ECM) to achieve the minute detail of this piece. ECM uses an electrochemical process to remove unwanted material, in this case wafer-thin steel, with unrivalled precision.
Buxton has called his Mikro House 'a machine for living.' As he has stated, 'I...wanted the room spaces to be interesting three dimensionally. It was a real challenge to include all the objects and features that a kitchen or living room etc. might have. I wanted people to look at this miniature cube with all these elements folded out and think; I recognise that I could live there.' Initially a personal project that was a potential design for a life-sized exhibition stand, Mikro House became a part of Buxton's MIKRO series by popular demand. Buxton's designs were short listed for the Design Museum's 'Designer of the Year' award in 2004.
