Alison Wilding

Wilding was born in Blackburn, Lancashire in 1948. She studied at Ravensbourne College of Art from 1967-70 and subsequently studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1970-73.

Wilding's early works consisted of multi-media installations. In 1978, she began to produce sculptures concerned purely with physicality and materiality. Wilding has an interest in the sensual and textural properties of materials and their location is space in light. She often exploits this interest by contrasting forms and materials to produce sculptures that are at once satisfying and mysterious.

Dualities often lie at the heart of Wilding's sculptures. She uses the innate qualities of the rawest of raw materials to produce sculptures that contrast transparency and opacity, light and shadow and weight and immateriality. The result is often sculptures with a profound sensuous presence that are self-referential and self-sufficient.
