This and This and This is composed of four triangles that interlock one another and hover precariously above the ground. Equally suggestive of minimalism, constructivism and monumentalism Rothschild’s sculpture is a playful form that transcends notions of equilibrium. By re-purposing materials such as aluminium and steel, synonymous with function and industry, into a beautiful and abstract geometric form Rothschild successfully poses questions about established and constructed concepts of material reality. Her chosen palette for this work; red, black and green are typical of Rothschild's oeuvre and suggestive of both modern art minimalist primary colours and new age and the occult aesthetics. This and This and This undermines physical and material expectations and employs art historical and non-canonical movements into a work that is both conceptually complex yet gracefully stoic.
About The Artist
Traditionally wrought, yet highly conceptual, Rothschild’s work is rendered in a varied range of materials including aluminium, leather, wood, tiles and paper. Explaining: “The ideal way to look at art is to be permanently confused”, she is concerned with the physical experience of sculpture and our relationship with objects and ways of looking. Consistently referencing other artists and artistic movements of the twentieth century, her work investigates the relationships between society and the individual, belief and object, volume and mass, and concept and form. Interested in how objects acquire meaning extraneous to their material reality, much of her work examines the spiritual investment in objects engendered by faith, and frequently incorporates the aesthetic trappings of different beliefs, ideologies, countercultures and religions.
