The Wares of the Coniston Secession

2015
Stoneware

By appropriating visual tropes of modernist design Giles Round intends to explore the history of ideological positions and in doing so propose new methods of living and production. The Wares of the Coniston Secession is a combination of jugs, mugs, caraffes, containers and decanters that seek to explore alternative histories of modernism and propose varying ways of perceiving this past. By drawing on aesthetics associated with modernism's design history Round ignites questions about the use value and function of being an artist and the strange distance and objectified categories of objects of art and objects of function. Giles Round was invited to make these works by artists and curators Robert Rush and Alex Hoda who invited 9 other artists to create ceramic works in the wood-fired kiln at Cass Sculpture Foundation in 2015. These works formed exhibition Rough Music and were rendered functional either as tables, glasses, jugs, mugs etc. at a dinner at Edel Assanti gallery in London.

About The Artist

Giles Round creates sculptures and assemblages. These are composed of an array of materials, which includes ready made and ceramic objects, architectural screens and paintings. He arranges these objects so as to divide space and invite a directed movement around a room. Giles appropriates craft and design into an art context in an attempt to collapse the hierarchies of applied and fine arts. More mischevous undertones are often camouflaged by safe and interior aesthetics. For example for his exhibition AGAIN! SORRY! AGAIN! SORRY! at Young Team HQ in 2015 Round created ceramic vases holding flowers and curtains. These objects were, however in the shape of phallus' and depicting erotic scenes. Giles Round deliberately chooses mediums that appear initially safe and domestic, but which in fact allude to something far more dark and erotic.
