Stoneware, Glazed ceramic
22.5 x 19 x 30 cm

This work is part of a series of jugs which Robert Rush and Alex Hoda produced in the wood fired kiln at CASS for exhibition Rough Music which they both curated and created work for. Historically, medieval Puzzle Jugs were created to be employed for drinking games. They were deliberately made with several holes in the sides and multiple spouts with hidden plumbing. These obstacles were inserted into the jugs in order to challenge the drinker to imbibe the wine or ale without spilling the drink out of the vessels holes. These works are a continuation of both the artists’ interest in concealed and forgotten social, historical uses for objects and social rituals. Puzzle Jugs were part of exhibition Rough Music and used at a dinner in which all art works made for this exhibition were made functional either as tables, glasses, jugs, mugs etc.

About The Artist

For this collaborative project Alex Hoda and Robert Rush were interested in the medieval concept of 'Rough Music', where when people were shamed in society they were confronted with cacophonous noises outside their homes in the form of people banging pans, screaming and stamping their feet. Alex Hoda and Robert Rush invited a selection of ceramic artists to make work in Cass Sculpture Foundation's wood-fired kiln in response to this idea of 'Rough Music'. Drawing on ceramics 'outsider art' currency and often ugly 1970's speckled aesthetic Hoda and Rush curated an exhibition of raw, medieval inspired works. Most of the works were functional objects, such as vases, mugs, tables that were them employed at a dinner at Edel Assanti Gallery, London in 2015.
