Justin O'Brien was born in Croydon, London, in 1972. Justin O'Brien lives and works in Littlehampton, West Sussex
Justin is both a craftsman, designer and independent artist who creates bespoke, customised designs, commissioned by a select group of high-end clients. He frequently collaborates with architects and interior designers.
A furniture craftsman by trade, O'Brien's philosophy is that furniture ought to be viewed as sculpture. His designs are organic, replicating forms to be found within the natural environment. He began his career training as a cabinet-maker at Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire. Choosing to design furniture with a strong sculptural aesthetic, this led to a brief career in set design and artistic direction within the film industry. Forever passionate about his craft, he returned to his cabinet making roots some year’s later working alongside a colleague from Rycotewood. Continually honing his individual take on design, he then went on to work for a thriving joinery firm. Based near Henley on Thames, the firm had a large central and west London client base. It was within this industry environment that he discovered a passion for a creative process which embraced modern technology alongside handmade craft. It was at this point Justin began experimenting more with sheet materials such as plywood, which lends itself perfectly to a component based style of design. Justin has now embraced this further and by utilising minor repetitive adjustment, he creates linear based but free flowing forms taking inspiration from the natural world around us. This theme continues to resonate through much of his work today.
