Hartley’s work establishes tension through a careful fusion of surfaces and materials. Working in painting and sculpture his work demonstrates a focus and dedication to formal relationships between colour, texture, shape, and movement. The varying processes, including layering, and excavating help create optical effects and a distortion of one’s perception. The processes, along with the foam soaked resin sculptures, locks them in movement; a frozen moment of stability and abandonment
