Born in Hampshire in 1946, Sandy Brown studied Daisei Pottery at Mashiko Japan (1969-73). She had her first solo show in 1985 at Beaux Arts, Bath. Since then she has exhibited internationally in both Europe and further away. These include New York, Los Angeles, Germany, Sweden and Korea.
Sandy Brown has exhibited since 1975, often several times a year. This intense timetable has led to her being one of the best known British ceramicists. She has appeared on television several times, including a Carlton TV visit to her studio in 2002 and an appearance on the BBC news for her 2006 exhibition, performance and DVD The Still Point and the Dance. This project received a Major Individual Grant Award from Arts Council England South West and toured throughout England and abroad in 2007-2008. Aside from this prestigious funding, Sandy Brown has won several awards from South West Arts, including a Major Fellowship Award. She has also gained awards from the Crafts Council and, in 1988, gained a funded year in residency in Australia from the British and Australian Councils.
Exhibitions include Couleurs: Les Peintures de la Terre, touring France in 2005, 25 Years of Ceramics in Holland, Contemporary British Ceramics in 2004 in Los Angeles and The Golden Age of Ceramics: 50 Years of Pivotal Ceramicists in 2002. Solo shows include Sandy Brown 'The Exhilaration of Life' shown in both UK and Germany. In 1999 she had a solo show in Kunst & Keramic gallery, Deventer, Holland and, after being shown in the 2001 World Ceramic Exposition in Korea, she had a solo exhibition in the Contemporary Ceramics Gallery, London entitled Sandy Brown: New Work. She had a solo show in Heidleberg, Germany in 2003 and has exhibited both solo and in group exhibitions in Sweden, new York, Los Angeles, France, Norway, Canada, Denmark, Australia and across the UK.
Sandy Brown has her work in several collections, both private and public. These include the Victoria and Albert Museum, the World Ceramic Centre, Ichon, Korea, the Crafts Council of Great Britain, the Crafts Council of Australia and the British Council. Her work is also on display in museums countrywide, including Aberdeen Museum, the Anthony Shaw Collection and Dillington House, Somerset. It is also on display in Ulster Museum, Steninge Palace, Sweden and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
