Untitled considers violence both through its materials and its subject.
Two materials have been violently blown into each other, and a splintering, brittle plastic form invades itself, forcing an unwilling collaboration of materials. The materials have become hollowed and deadened through this victimization. However, to be dead, implies that they once had a life.
Smyth has long been interested in the 'life' of materials, and her works often address this interest, usually through her incorporation of drawing, which she employs to open her materials up, by pulling energy out of them through these simple gestures. Traces of this process are evident on the surface of the sculpture.
Untitled presents a horrific scene immediately following a moment of impact. We are left to consider how this violent act has rendered these materials lifeless and at odds with one another.
