Molly Smyth was born in London, where she lives and works. In 2008, she completed a BA in Sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts.
Her works are highly personal mediations on shapes and images arising from experience of physical presence and absence. The qualities of mass, hollowness, density, exposure and restricted visibility are employed rigorously in Smyth's sculptures. These qualities are used to impart values that are often temporal and concerned with withheld revelation. The bodies or structures of the sculptures often contain 'events' which describe formal narratives in the materials that incur poetic resonance.
Smyth's sculptural practice ranges from the miniature to the monumental, often referencing the built environment, particularly urban landscapes, as well as the human form.
Smyth's first solo exhibition, presented by Lucky PDF, Delays Not Colours took place in London in 2009. Her work has also been exhibited as part of Bold Tendencies III and Time Flies, at the Hannah Barry Gallery in London.
