Marianne Vitale was born in New York City, USA where she currently lives and works. In 1995, she completed a BFA in Film at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Vitale's work is fundamentally concerned with narrative across a diverse range of mediums. She uses film, theatre, drawing, dance, performance and sculpture to explore their formal boundaries and produce new modes of narrative. Her inventive incorporation of various materials into her works creates dynamic encounters that blur the boundaries across various formal categories. Using the detritus of New York City's streets and easily obtained materials such as burlap and wax, Vitale assembles discarded objects into sculptures that evoke crude construction, the absurd and the familiar alongside a lyrical and delicate expressionism.
Vitale's work has featured in solo exhibitions at the SculptureCenter, New York (2009) and IBID Projects, London (2009); the NADA Art Fair, Miami (2008); Deborah Colton Gallery, Houston (2008) and Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm (2007). Her work has been included in group exhibitions at White Columns, New York (2007); Kling & Bang, Reykjavik (2006); The Kitchen, New York (2006) and the Brooklyn International Film Festival (2004).
