This slender woodcarving in Lime is based on the form of a curling leaf. Made with tools and small planes of the violin-maker: a Froe which is a wood splitting tool; an Axe for initial carving and shaping; a Gouge, Knife, Spokeshave, Travisher and Plane - each has its part in the fine carving, shaping and finishing. Colour is achieved by an application of iron solution that reacts with the tannin in the wood. The piece is waxed with a micro crystalline conservation wax, which does not age or yellow.
