"Shoal" was Brown's first "Fused Deposition Model" (FDM) and was designed to explore the extremities of the FDM technique. FDM is an additive process and uses fine extrusion nozzles to deposit a membrane of material where required.
The strength of the material and its soluble support structure facilitates the manifestation of extremely complex forms generated in the cyber environment. Form behaves differently in the virtual world and through this medium it is possible to transcend the limitations of conventional sculptural techniques. Both the conception and manifestation of this sculpture is dependant on the software and hardware used to create it.
All of the many elements in the composition began life as spheres or cylinders. Through a unique modeling process they are transformed in relation to their position in space and each other. The position of every component in "Shoal" is relative to the rest of the piece resulting from the application of common modifiers. "Shoal" has a dynamic quality, whilst at the same time appearing tranquil in an apparently effortless movement, as if momentarily suspended in the weightless environment where it was conceived.
