Untitled (Silver and Gold) is part of Eva Berendes' series of 'folding screens' or 'paravents.' Folding screens originated in China and soon became popular in Japan for their architectural functionality, but were also considered a work of art in their own right. Over the years, these screens arrived in the Western world, bringing with them a dialogue between art and design.

Untitled (Silver and Gold) expands upon this dialogue, whilst investigating questions about both painting and sculpture by combining and conflating references to these varied fields. Composed of parallel threads, strung tautly around a wooden frame, as if for weaving, Berendes employs an applied arts sensibility in Untitled (Silver and Gold) to construct rigorous abstract forms using the language of formalism associated with sources such as modernist painting, the Bauhaus, Hollywood glamour and 1980s Memphis furniture.

Untitled (Silver and Gold) reveals the suggestive nature of these historical movements, emphasizing their close relationships and underscoring Berendes' ability to develop her own vocabulary of modernism through an engagement with its history, and its wide-reaching influences.
