The presiding value of Young's body of work is to show the natural beauty, constructed in its physical history, of each piece of stone, allowing the visitor to engage with nature. Young was born in London in 1951 into a family of renowned artists and writers. She received her secondary education at Putney High School, Holland Park School, Friends School Saffron Walden, and the King Alfred School, London. First interested in painting, she spent her youth split between London, Wiltshire and Italy before studying at both Chelsea School of Art and at the St Martin's School of Art.
In the late sixties and seventies, she travelled widely, visiting Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, France and Italy, Africa and the Middle-East and it was during these years of travelling that she developed her broad view of art. During the seventies and eighties, she lived and worked with the late Simon Jeffes, proprietor of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. They had one son, Arthur, born 1978. She produced the artwork for various album covers for the band, including Music from the Penguin Cafe, to which she also contributed vocals.
