Loop - reminiscent of the sinuous, knotted, 'over and under' imagery of traditional Celtic design exemplifies O'Connell's ability to capture and immortalise a fleeting moment whilst retaining its energy and movement. It is composed of a single curved plane, manipulated and twisted in space with rapidity and muscularity, a feat made possible by the artistically liberating advanced composite materials at O'Connell's disposal.
The leaf-shaped negative space created by this planar twist is also of significant sculptural import. This shape - a favourite of the artist's - demonstrates O'Connell's pervasive interest in geometry. It also draws upon ancient Sheela-na-gigs, figurative carvings of women with exaggerated tear-shaped vulvas, often in stone, found in ancient Irish (and British) churches.
