Curve to Point is constructed from a curved plane that has been manipulated in space to create a vortex. The piece's form and title suggest a work that is wholly formalist in nature. However, in keeping with the inspirational sources for O'Connell's ouevre, this work alludes to both geometry and ancient Celtic traditions.
A spiral in reverse, Curve to Point withdraws to an apparent point (rather than from a point, as is the mathematical norm). Spirals - traditionally associated with infinity and, therefore, eternal life - are naturally occurring phenomena, found in shells, plants and weather systems, that have inspired humanity since their discovery.
As a child O'Connell was a frequent visitor to Newgrange passage tomb, Boyne Valley, Ireland. The entrance stone to this vast megalith depicts the triple spiral motif (a traditional Celtic and pre-Celtic symbol) from which the artist drew inspiration for this work.
