Conetwirl possesses a considered sense of movement. Like its 'sister' piece, Cephalopod, Conetwirl also conveys a specific weightlessness, as if supported by water as a result of the multi-directional and undulating plane from which it is constructed.

Created from an 'opened out' cone form, Conetwirl is the most geometrically complex piece in O'Connells' Biomorphia. However, far from being a formalist work, and in keeping with the pervasive nature of the organic on O'Connell's sculpture, Conetwirl was inspired by the way in which sea plants, such as coral, move within water. This work is O'Connell's attempt to freeze frame this specific type of movement.
