Douglas White was born in 1977 in Guildford. He read Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art (1997-2000) and graduated from an MA in Sculpture at Royal College of Art in 2005. In the same year, he was awarded the Deutsche Bank Pyramid Award, and a Mann Drawing Prize. He was also shortlisted for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize and the Jerwood Drawing Prize. White has also won the Cockburn Art Prize (1999), the Southsquare Art Scholarship (1996) and the Margaret Pollock Scholarship (2004).
His work was selected for the New Contemporaries exhibition in 2004 and 2006. He has taken part in many group exhibitions including The Show 2005, which was held at the Royal College of Art in London, and Art School, which took place at the Bloomberg Space, London. Douglas White has also been involved with exhibitions such as Fame and Promise, and Migrant, which were held at 14 Wharf Road, London and The Dolphin Gallery, Oxford respectively. His first solo show was held in October 2006 at Paradise Row, London. White's exhibitions date back as far as May 1998, When Will It Be Bad?... was held at the Vaughan Exhibition Centre, Oxford.
In 2005, Douglas White's work was featured in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Dazed and Confused, The Independent and Time Out. In Art Review, Douglas White was featured in the Top 25 Graduates article of the magazine's January edition. White's work is mostly constructed from found objects; from blown-out tyres to burnt basketballs and rotten trees. He assembles these into unlikely forms and juxtapositions, creating totemic works that pulse with energy.
