Entirely crafted from treated metals, Diane Maclean's Open Book is typical of her contemporary, clean style. The work's curving front panels, of polished and coloured stainless steel, give a magical quality to reflections of the surrounding woods. The brushed surface of the 'cover' is also gently reflective creating an ethereal presence in the woodland sunlight.

Drawing upon family and cultural heritage, Open Book is a personal tribute to Maclean's husband's grandfather, the great Gaelic scholar Donald Maclean, who dedicated his life to collecting the texts of the Gaelic language, helping to save the language from extinction. In 1916, he sold his precious library of books to the Marquis of Bute to raise money to educate his children. Only one publication remains in the family, the Typographica Scoto-Gadelica, which is the hand-written and beautifully bound bibliography of all the texts and Maclean's inspiration for this new work.
