Island is a large-scale steel sculpture inspired by Diane Maclean's travels by boat around the Hebridean islands on the west coast of Scotland, where the islands at first appear small but then open up to reveal cliffs of rock gleaming wet from sea spray and rain.

In Island Maclean has captured the essence of this powerful experience. To echo the light and spaces created by the juxtaposition of the sea and the cliffs, Island has incorporated highly polished steel structures that rise up from the ground. The mirror-like columns reflect an abstracted image of sky, clouds and trees, giving the piece brilliant freshness and vitality.

Diane Maclean is a sculptor whose work is highly personal, inspired by nature and her Scottish heritage, yet rendered in industrial materials with a sharp, contemporary finish. This duality in her work allows further comparisons with sleek urban environments; the strongly rectilinear, vertical forms in Island also draw on urban 'islands' such as Manhattan or Hong Kong.
