A breaking point, the fleeting moment between night and day or dark and light, is celebrated in this sculpture. First made for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Night and Day was shown about seven metres from the ground in an oak tree, remote from touch but entirely visible. Colin Rose eschews tactile quality in these works in favour of the visual, and although at Sculpture at Goodwood it is possible to touch the sculpture, the lower level gives the viewer a more intimate association with the piece.
Colin Rose likes machined metal with its purity of line to be seen against organic form. The contrast between pale aluminium and the dark background of trees, and static geometric form against natural shape and changing landscape, contributes to the whole experience of the sculpture.
