The skeleton leaf wrought in steel that has been curled and welded sits on a decaying tree stump amongst real fallen leaves. The 'halo', made from similar elements but with a slightly different construction, is positioned on another part of the stump, and is akin to a fungal growth, the sort of growth that is nourished by decaying vegetation. Within this simple arrangement there lies the full circle of life.
Avril Wilson is a blacksmith. Much of her work is functional, but at the same time extremely decorative and sometimes almost medieval in character. A Leaf with Halo is a little different from the complex foliage and the other natural forms which lie at the heart of her craft, because of the simplicity of its structure. Trees, leaves, pods, fruits, shells, suns and moons are wrought from metal and assembled, finding form in objects as diverse as candle holders, gates and decorative arches.
A Leaf with Halo quickly asserts its presence on the woodland floor, entirely at home amongst the beauty that inspired it.
