Born in Knaresbrough in 1934, Antonia Spowers studied and worked throughout Europe before moving to Wales from London in the 1990s. Since then, she has been commissioned to make and exhibit works and has undertaken residencies in this country alongside projects for an international sculpture park in Lithuania. Spowers' residencies have included working with various organisations including schools, local communities and environmental trust volunteers.
Spowers' work has an emphasis on environment and sustainability. She has created solar powered, self-circulating water sculptures and has employed recycled and re-usable materials in combination with new technologies.
Spowers' recent work has focused on water, its structure, behaviour, altered states and multiple associations. She has also been interested in exploring themes of disconnection and displacement, which have developed ideas of continuity and connection and an interest in layers beneath the surface, determining a new direction for Spowers work.
